This summer I revisited some important places in my life along with the people who are most important to me in my life: my husband and my children. Out of our visits came many stories, memories which reminded me of the good story I am a part of.
This semester we will be looking at STORY and STORYTELLING to begin with, and then we'll weave in our own stories to talk about identity and what it means to be human. Check here for what's happened in class as well as links and suggestions for interesting articles and videos.

Many students were away today, so I'm letting you know what you missed in hopes that you will do some catch up tomorrow.
A reminder that you should have Part 1 of Life of Pi read by Monday and your first dialectical journal done as well.
Today in class students had a round robin discussion about the similarities and differences in the two stories The Storyteller and The Witch. We then ended the class with a discussion about which elements of the story and the author's choices most affect the tone of the story. Please read both stories and complete the Venn Diagram attached below.

Today students journaled a response to the following quote from a novel called Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge. Captain O'Hara says these words to a young woman immigrating to Australia from England:
"There are many things that go into the making of a man [or woman] into more than a brute beast, but there's three in chief, and they are the places life sets you down, the folks life knocks you up against, and, not the things ye get but the things ye don't get."
2. We finished watching Chimamanda Adichie's TED talk on "The Danger of a Single Story". Please watch the talk (Google the title and you will find it). Then respond to the questions on the handout attached below.
