We've embarked on our first read of the year. What do you make of it? Is there a character you are drawn to? Is there someone who you'd not care to befriend? What do you think of the friendship between Lennie and George? This may be a setting you are not familiar with. Can anyone enlighten us on the Great Depression? Why were people moving around looking for work? Any connections to today? I just read about Somalians coming to Canada and how the unemployment rate for Somalians in Canada is in the double digits unlike the rest of the population even though many of them are well-educated. What makes George and Lennie undesirable? These are a few of my questions, but you may have others.
I didn't want to read this book because when I was young I saw the movie and was pretty horrified by it.. don't wanna give anything away:)
Since I don't have the book handy I don't know if we meet Curley in the first 1/3 but he's a real awful guy I wouldn't wanna even be around.
I'd like George to be my friend b/c he's a real straight shooter and incredibly loyal, you can see how loyal he is to Lennie when he could easily ditch him.
Lennie and George have a real bond. You might think only Lennie needs George, but George needs Lennie too.

i like that every chapter starts with a big chunk of text set for just the setting. not sure if this is right or not but i remember some episodes of bugs bunny and tweety show where there was a yeti that got bugs bunny and proceeded to name him george and pet him furiously or heavily. it's interesting that this book starts like it would be a comedy.
i like Slim simply because it describes him a lot and as someone who understands the reasoning behind anything and could accept anyone. i'm not sure if i dislike Curly as it just sets him up to be the bad guy, i think i would dislike Carlson more because of what happens later.
the Great Depression was a time when the economy worldwide had collapsed with america creating many programs with which to get itself out of debt.

Was not too thrilled with the beginning of Mice and Men because I found it a bit dull but as I read more it got a bit more exciting. I would definitely would not befriend Curley because he sounds like an unreasonable person. Lennie and Georges relationship reminds me a bit of my siblings, although not as harsh. I think people are careful when they employ strangers those days because of the hardships and they may be thieves. Lennie would be a bit scary to hire since he's gigantic. I heard the most exciting part of the book is the end, so I'm excited to finish it.

When i heard that "of mice and men" would be our first read I was excited, i knew it was a short book and would be an easy read. I am about half way threw the book and I find it captures a certain image I havent seen before. Im sure the ending will be just as good as the first half.

Most of you know at least something about me--that I'm happily married, that I have a daughter, Sara, who is married to Daniel, my son-in-law, as well as a son named Tristan. Alas, our temperamental Maine coon, Eliot, fell prey to a coyote this year, although our downstairs' neighbours' cat, Jeffrey, has made our couch his second domain.
